  Class Descriptions  / Proper Attire

 

 

 

Class Descriptions

Pre-Dance I/II

Ø  An introduction to dance, which includes ballet, jazz, and tap.  Applying the technique the students will use “barre work”, steps across the floor, and a dance combination to further their education.

Jazz and Hip Hop

Ø  Dancing to video and/or Broadway music incorporating isolations, barre work, center stretches, and traveling across the floor with technical moves ending with a dance combination.

Tap

Ø  A combination of styles and techniques for timing, speed, agility and rhythmic dynamics.

Modern

Ø  A style of theatrical dance that breaks from the mold of classical ballet and favors movement deriving from the expression of inner feeling.

Lyrical

Ø  An expressive dance form combining ballet, jazz and modern techniques.

Ballet

Ø  A disciplined art form that demonstrates a graceful and precise way of movement.  Ballet is a background necessary for all forms of dance.

Pointe

Ø  Dancing on pointe requires considerable strength and skill and is a central part of a ballerina’s repertory. 

 

 

Requirements for Pre-dance, Combination, Tap and Jazz, Modern & Hip/Hop Classes

All dancewear requirements are expected by the third week of classes.

All female dancers are required to wear a leotard and tights for every class.

Ages 3-6

Ø  Pink ballet shoes. Black patent leather tap shoes.

Ø  Pink leotard (short or long sleeve, or tank-top style) and pink tights. No leotards with skirts attached.

Ø  No dance skirts or tutu.

Ø  Boys need white T-shirt and sweat pants or shorts, black patent leather tap shoes and black ballet shoes.

 

Ages 7&8

Ø  Tap – Bloch U shell buckle tan tap shoes.

Ø  Jazz – Split-sole black jazz shoes.

Ø  Black leotard with pink, tan or black tights. No dance skirts.

Ø  Biker shorts or jazz pants are allowed. (When wearing jazz pants instructors need to be able to see the dancer’s feet.)

Ø  Boys need white T-shirt and sweat pants or shorts, black patent leather tap shoes and black ballet shoes.

 

All Students 9 and up:

Ø  Tap – Bloch U shell buckle tan tap shoes.

Ø  Jazz  - Split-sole black jazz shoes

Ø  Hip Hop Jazz–Split-sole black jazz shoes - Jazz sneakers for advanced levels may be required

Ø  Black leotard or bike-a-tard is recommended for class.

Ø  Biker shorts, jazz pants, form-fitting dance warm-up attire are allowed.

Ø  Boys – white T-shirt and sweat pants or shorts, Black split sole jazz shoes. Black lace-up tap shoes (see instructor).

Ø  May also require tan slip-on booties for performance.

 

 

 

Proper Attire and requirements Ballet and Lyrical

Lyrical:  All Levels

Ø  Must take ballet

Ballet:  All levels

Ø  Hair must be securely fastened away from the face and neck.  Hair in bun for all Companies.

Ø  Students may wear form fitting dance warm-ups. 

Ø  Dance skirts are reserved for Pointe class only. 

Ø  Black leotard any style, pink footed tights, pink ballet shoes with elastics sewn on. 

Ø  Pointe shoes must have ribbons sewn correctly and elastics if necessary.

Ø  No shorts, baggy shirts, or loose-fitting warm-ups are allowed.

Pointe

Ø  Pointe must be at least 11 years old

Ø  Must take 2 ballet classes in addition to the Pointe class.

Ø  Must be approved by the instructor and director to enter a Pointe Class

Ø  Do not buy Pointe shoes if you are starting Pointe class for the first time until the teacher instructs you to do so.

 

*****    T-shirts, sweats and shorts are not part of the dance attire and students will not dance that day.    *****
